...is how you awaken. The last you remember, you were enjoying yourself at Deepwater Tavern with a few friends. Now you find yourself painfully bedded on smooth pebbles, jagged rocks, and dirty wet sand. You sit up and find that all of your packs and gear have been taken. You have on a pair of tough canvas pants and a comfortable, though now somewhat wet, unbleached linen shirt, neither of which you recognize. The beach and its adjacent calm body of water, for that is what is seems to be, streches as far as you can see.

Unfortunately, that isn't very far. A dense fog occludes your vision beyond about 20 paces.

You feel powerfully groggy and yet uninjured. A wave of nausea hits you. You lean forward and feel you are about to wretch, but the sensation passes. While staring at your feet, you notice you have a ring around your big toe. It is silver in color, with purple stones imbedded in the metal.

Proposed action queue:
1. Taste the water. Is it salty? That would provide evidence that this is an ocean, and not just a lake.
2. Try to take off this ring for a closer look. Does it come off? Would it come off more easily if it were wet? Any sign of inscriptions, or a pattern to those stones?
3. Look in the direction opposite the water. What's over there? More sand? A dense forest? A field of jagged sharp rocks? Hmm... wonder if I can find some shoes.

If no one else makes any other recommendations, I'd run with those three! Not sure if Arz wants to write it, or if he's letting others contribute. Obviously, only he knows the answers to the above questions, making it tricky for the rest of us to write much ourselves.

You blink at the ring and try to remove it. It won't budge. You bring your foot across your other leg and examine the ring on your toe. It doesn't rotate around the toe. You count ten stones, all purple and flush with the metal of the ring (http://www.argento.co.uk/productListing.cfm/department_Key/3/subdepartment_key/1/product_key/691/hot_diamonds_ring.htm#ProductDetail).

You stand and look towards the shore (http://www.prfilm.ca/albums/copperisland/aaj.jpg). It's about 5 paces from where you lay. You are neither thirsty nor hungry, yet somehow you feel drawn towards the water. The water, if that's what it is, is dark and still (http://static.flickr.com/38/90459281_06cb592959_o.jpg). There is no smell of salt, though you do notice a slight odor of old rot.

After deciding that the water isn't immediately deadly, you take small scoop in your hands. It seems dark (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Black_coffee_in_cup.jpg) no matter the depth, and chilling - you splash it on your foot to lubricate the ring. As you sit back down on the rocky beach and begin futilely tugging at the ring, you hear an explosion behind and above your left shoulder.

The sudden sound in the silence is shocking - though it quickly dies away and is replaced by the sound of rock falling on rock, sand falling on rock, and the plunks and splashes of rocks falling in water. You can't see where the explosion might have been, but it sounded like it was fairly high, though not very distant behind. The fog prevents you from seeing very far in any direction, but with your back to the water, it looks like there is something dark and solid just past your field of vision.

Proposed actions (others feel free to add to this):
1. Walk toward the cliff, or wall, or whatever it is. Stop about ten feet in front, or wherever the visibility becomes reasonable. What's it made of? (Too close, and one of those falling rocks might hit me!)
2. Move parallel to the barrier, to just below the approximate position of the noise. Examine the ground (water?) there. Are there any unnatural objects, aside from rocks?
3. Look for a path up, if one is evident. Any sign the fog might be thinning above?

I'd recommend doing all of this quietly. If things are being exploded, it probably doesn't pay to suggest oneself as the next target.

You leave the water's edge, walking cautiously towards the explosion. Ahead of you in the fog you see a cliff face. It's obviously stone of some kind, brown (http://www.themeridiancondos.com/Floorplans/design_samples/small/LVM_MarbleEngBrown.jpg) and black (http://www.ced.ltd.uk/Gallery/Full/Granite%20-%20Black%20(Basalt)%20-%20Flame%20Textured%20-%20B.jpg) mottled. You will have to get closer to examine it any better.

You can't see any evidence of where an explosive might have hit, but again, the fog (http://www.bodacia.com/morro/approach01.jpg) is quite thick - you can not see how high the rock wall goes.

As you walk several paces along the shore, you see that the rock wall is fairly smooth and consistent in form, without any obvious way up.

You stop at where you think the explosion occured, or rather, below where the explosion occured. You don't notice anything peculiar about the area - just rocks (http://www.olympus.net/personal/sgricketts/Seal%20Rock%20Oyster%20Beach%204.7.00.jpg), pebbles (http://www.yuksel.ca/scenery/Pebbles-Yarmouth-NS.jpg), and wet sand (http://www.oshq.co.uk/graphics/photos/wetsand.jpg).

((Thanks for continuing Rytherion! I was hoping others would join in, but they can certainly do so later!

Just to let you know, as I understand it, you are still about 4-5 paces from the rock))

You pick up a handful of pebbles and gravel and aim high into the fog. As you rear your hand back, you are struck by a sense of vertigo. You toss the rocks as best you can up and towards the wall and bend forward, stabilizing yourself on with your hands on your thighs. You hear stone strike stone and then a lighter sound as the pebbles and gravel fall back to the beach. You are pretty sure you tossed the rocks into the fog, so you guess that the rock face is at least 30 feet high.

As your vertigo subsides you straighten yourself and approach the rock wall. It rises at almost perpendicular to the beach and is quite wet to the touch. You see that the rock is actually solidly brown, and the black streaks are some sort of growth, maybe an algae or a mold. As you approach the wall, the faint smell of rot becomes stronger. Standing next to the wall, you see no obvious handholds.

One thing is certain, this place is wet. Your hair, clothing, and even your eyelashes are already noticably damp. The pebbles and rocks are all wet. The sand is all wet. Although the light is weak, you can see that the wall has a sheen of moisture.

Far off, somewhere behind you, you hear another explosion.

You spin to face the direction the sound came from. Seconds later, you can hear the echo, muffled by the dense cloud around you. Sensing no immediate threat, you turn back to the wall. As you do, you think you notice a slight shifting in of the black substance that mottles the rock. You blink and stare hard, but see no movement.

The smell of rot is persistent, but not overpowering.

1. Poke the 'wall' with a stick or sharp object, does it move again?

Arzamas
07-10-2006, 04:33 PM
Deciding not to worry about the explosion, you blink at the surface infront of you and brush the water from your eyelashes.

Reluctant to touch the wall with your hand again, you look around for something to prod the black mottling off the wall with. All you see around you are rocks, pebbles, and sand. You pick up a sharper looking rock and scrape it against a particularly dark section of the wall. It smells pretty bad to be this close to the wall, but you are successfully scraping away some of the black growth, revealing...

brown rock underneath.

After a couple more seconds of scraping you step back to assess your handiwork. The rock underneath the mold doesn't look especially different here - wet and brown. But your scratches make a particularly pleasing shape.

((Point of clarification: Is this vegetative rot odor, or some kind of nastier "dead body" smell?))

Arzamas
07-12-2006, 06:35 PM
For the first time, you give some consideration to what is making the smell. Looking at the rock in your hand, you slowly bring it towards your nose, sniffing. The smell reminds you of...

All of the sudden, your nerves are on edge - you sorely wish you had your normal adventuring gear. You have smelled this scent, and recently.

Blight - the corruption and death of every natural thing, plant, animal, even the very earth. Could this be the doing of the Scourge? The black scum has a distinct odor when brought close to the nostril though - much like the Blight but different. You can't place your finger on it - you know the smell, but it difficult to pull it apart from the stink of death, decay and rot.

As you contemplate this, the smell becomes overpowering and you gag, dropping the stone to your feet.

Arzamas

You look around, the damp air suddenly menacing, the wall of stone doubling as a dreadful face of death. Your eyes rapidly scan the ground around you for a hefty sharp rock - an adze - but see nothing of promise. You step back, closer to the water, and with a yelp, spin around, as the waters part and reveal a drowned host of the undead.

Nothing looks back at you; no face of rotting flesh, skeletal hands wielding cruel sacrifical blades, nor swirling shades reaching to sear your skin with their freezing touch. You imagination is getting the best of you.

Sweeping your eyes back and forth from the wall to the water, you begin walking past the place where you heard the first explosion. About three minutes later, there is another distant explosion, the wall and water constant. Both are still, both dark.

You can't tell if the shore is bending or not, because it seems to meander and a sense of foreboding keeps you from really gaining your bearings. Not to mention the blasted fog. Does nothing change in this place?

As if to answer your question, you feel a shift in the dewy air, as if something is pushing it, moving it...from out across the water, towards the wall.

THE STORY SO FAR (FIRST BI-WEEKLY)

You have awakened, groggy and nauseated, on some sort of rocky beach, surrounded by fog. You have lost your packs, your gear, and you feel you are starting to lose your mind. However, you do have on some rough pants and a shirt, as well as a ring on one of your big toes. The ring is silvery metallic and has 10 purple stones set in it. It doesn't move when you touch it. The shore is rocky and pebbly, some stones are sharpish, some smooth. The water is essentially still and very dark. The place smells of rot.

As you face the water, there is a wall behind you, taller than you can see in the fog, made of brown rock with a black substance on it. The substance smells like the Blight. Something is making explosions overhead, breaking rock. You don't know what it is.

You have walked for several minutes to your left from where you awoke. You can't tell if the shore is straight or curving, but the wall and the water are the same (though sometimes the beach is of varying width). There are a few more explosions farther off while you are walking.

((So either the mysterious wind is coming from something hovering over the water, or something on the far side of the water. Let's see how wide this water is. Try throwing a stone across it. Does it land in water?))

Arzamas

You stare toward the direction of the wind, blinking. The fog seems to be billowing towards you, and you can see the wind has agitated the water. You bend down to pick up some rocks and are struck by vertigo again. You feel you are about to faint when a strong hand grips your shoulder and steadies you. Instead of a feeling of shock, you feel recognition and appreciation.

"Raz, you alright?" A green skinned hand squeezes your shoulder. You look up from the ground and into the face of a robed Orc. He looks stern but caring.

"I'm fine Kush, just..." you reach up and touch your forehead with both your hands...your dark green hands. You let out a shaky sigh "Let's keep moving"

Kush grunts and releases your shoulder. He turns away and reaches into a pouch, drawing out a map. Clearing his throat, "Now, if this map is correct..."

Kush looks up and points, and you follow his finger - you are in a swamp - lush but reeking. Likely Dustwallow or the Swamp of Sorrows. You are looking at a lake...no, across a lake to a temple. "That's where we will find the tablets" declares Kush, as he rolls his map and puts it away. "I told Tju'ki and Sam to meet us at the temple itself, so hopefully they haven't gotten into too much trouble."

Your head snaps to the right - you are suddenly aware of dragons...or dragonkin, somewhere to your right. "Keep moving - wyrms are close" you hear yourself mutter. Kush smiles and picks up the pace. Soon you reach the lake shore. Kush dives in and you follow.

As you break the water's surface, you find yourself standing on the shore of the black lake again, damp with fog, stones in hand. You have no idea what you just experienced, but you are where you are now. You throw the stones into billowing fog, and hear satisfying plunks. Whatever is blowing the fog is unaffected by your rock throwing. The water is slightly choppy. You hear an explosion farther to your left, and instinctually look left. You notice that the fog and water are less roiling a little further down the shore and that due to the wind, visibility is improving slightly (30 paces instead of 20)

You start moving to your left, scanning the lake in front of you. Something is pushing the air and you want to know what it is.

Your next step takes out of the billowing fog. Now that you aren't in the direct path of the wind, your ears pick up some sort of whirring hum - deep and constant. The fog on the lake in front of you has parted slightly, increasing your visibilty, but not enough to see anything worth noting. The lake continues out to the fog's edge. You continue peering into the fog, hoping it will continue to part and reveal...anything.

The whirring hum continues for about a minute, then starts to get duller. The fog begins to settle. You move a little further down the shore, hoping to see anything. You can tell that the the whirring hum is to your right and out on or across the lake somewhere. Its getting quieter and the fog is rolling back in.

Frustrated with the ever-present fog, but determined to find some comfort, you tug at one of the sleeves of your shirt. After a few rough tugs and a bit of gnawing at the seam, you manage to rip the sleeve off your arm. Hoping to use it as a sling, you pick up a several nice sized pebbles. You drop one of the rocks in the sling and give it a whirl. It has a nice heft, and you release the rock towards the lake. The stone travels into the fog some distance, and you hear a plunk, as the rock hits the water. It was neither a long, nor a powerful throw. You are still a pretty bad shot, but at least you have some speed and force behind it. You decide to pick up one more, a nice smooth one this time, and give it a whirl. *CRACK* Another explosion, sounding like it came from pretty far off to the right.

As you instinctively look to the right, you feel like something is squeezing your insides, twisting. You clutch your abdomen and groan. Your next breath is filled with with the smell of ash and burning things. You are near a stream of magma, inside a cave of some kind. Through your visor, you see the bodies of five giant salamanders, and a troupe of burned, but victorious looking, humans, night elves, dwarves and gnomes.

"Good work Grif!" one of the humans, a mage perhaps? says "I thought for sure he was going to come straight for me, but you held him back!"

You smile, as the pain in your gut is relieved by a healer working magic on you.

"Hey Grif, check out the ring on this guy!" A gnome decked in plate beckons you over to the largest of the bodies. The band is thick, and heavy - the metal is the semi-rare dark iron. "Man, that's a nice piece right there" you say. "You can sense it's sturdiness, just by looking at it."

Just then you hear an explosion of magic energy against rock. "INCOMING" someone shouts. You look over and see the encompassing fog and the black lake. The air is chilly and grey and wet.

You don't know what is causing these visions, but they feel very very real and you want them to stop. This shore is stupid, these rocks are stupid, and that wall...nothing changes!

Well, sometimes, luck favors the bold, you think. You grab a couple of pebbles and slip them into the sleeve/sling before tying it at both ends. You then stick the stone-toting sleeve into the waist of your pants and decide to get into the water.

You put a foot into the water - its very cold and rocky. Even up close, the water is black and essentially opaque.

The water is up past your knee. You are about 15 feet from the shore. Your numbing feet tell you that the lakebed is not unlike the shore - rocky, sandy, stony. The whole experience is dark - cold - and you can feel an unnatural dread, whispering from beneath the surface.

You vainly peer into the water, searching for any sign of life or movement other than your own. You splash the water in front of you, hoping to disturb some small fish. A round thing appears on the water's surface, and a pupil seemingly appears in its middle.
http://thumbs.photo.net/photo/2103477-sm.jpg

But it pops, like a bubble. You breath a small sigh, and continue into the water. You sharply draw in breath as the chilling water hits your groin and navel. You turn around and the shore is completely obscured by fog.

A sudden feeling of being completely lost grips you and you struggle against fear and the need to find your way back. Two steps and you can make out the shoreline again.

As the cold water hits your body upper body, you start breathing quickly, and you feel a slight tinge of anger and shame, as if people are pointing and laughing at your weakness. You just know that some entity is relishing in your fear and suffering.

You keep your head above the water and slowly paddle out, into the fog. It's not to far before you see something, rising up out of water.

There is a pretty sheer wall of rock in the water. Not a whole lot place for purchase. You are swimming/treading the water about 10 yards from it. It looks like it might be an island of some kind, but you certainly can't see all the way around it (due to the fog).

As you near the rock face, you try to put your feet down on the lake bed. At first you catch nothing, but then, after stubbing one of your toes on something, you find a small degree of purchase on the jagged submerged rock. It's not much, but its enough so that you don't have to constantly tread water. Your feet are feeling a bit numb.

Now within arm's reach of the cliff face, you look to your right and to your left. It might be a trick of the fog, but the face of the cliff seems to bend on the right hand side. Perhaps this cliff isn't as interminible as the beach seemed to be.

Further along the cliff face, you notice an odd film on the water.

((<3 welcome back!))

You continue maneuvering around the cliff base and reach the film - it isn't as easy to notice from here, but you can definitely smell it - some sort of oil or oil-based substance. There isn't a very large patch of it.

Deciding to go all the way with the water, you draw a deep breath and duck your head under, checking for a pipe or something that might be leaking the stuff.

You hazard opening your eyes under the water and it's incredible - you see absolutely nothing. The light was fairly poor at the surface, but even a few inches below the surface, you see nothing. You hold your palm in front of you, but not until its about 6 inches from your face can you actually make it out.

You feel something drip on the back of your partially submerged head.

You feel something - stretching. You feel like you are floating. The water, pitch black and chilling a moment ago is bluish/green, translucent, and you feel no temperature at all. You feel no sudden urge to bring your head to the surface, no need to breath at all, and instead start swimming down - deeper and deeper.

You see a naga gliding among the coral. Your skeletal hands instinctively begin their dance, bringing forth magical energies - and a bolt of shadow flies at the twisted creature. You mutter a few syllables, and you see the water around the creature start to bubble as if it were boiling. Enraged, the naga surges at you, but you let forth with a wicked cackle, and the snakecreature loses all its sense and begins swimming away in an erratic manner. If your rotting face had a jaw you would be grinning, as you ready another bolt of shadow energy, and a curse.

After a few more seconds the naga's body is wracked with pain and the horrid thing attempts to flee towards any sort of safety - but too late. Purple bolts fly from your hand and you feel the life energy, the very soul, drawn out of the naga, and weakly surge back to your palm. Coils and arms spasm once, twice, and are still, floating in the water like so much detritus. You pocket the shard, and continue swimming, searching for new prey. You see a sunken ship ahead, and are overcome by a sudden sense of loss.

You close your eyes, and see yourself, clothed, warm, with living skin and lips, wonderful wonderful lips. By Sargeras's knees, you miss your lips. In your memory, you are on a boat, bound from Menethil Harbor, north to Pyrewood. News of the plague has spread and you and your platoon are going to see how the village is holding out.

You feel another drip on your submerged head and open your eyes to the cold and the dark.

((It's been quite a while since anyone has even posted in the RP channel. I figure I might try and see what can be done. If you would like to pick Cold & Damp back up, I still have the world formed - just needs people inside it!))
